‘After Titian: Girl with a Basket of Fruits (Lavinia)’

Follower of Gustave Doré (French, 1832–1883)

Late 19th Century, signed and dated G. Doré, 1874 lower right

A richly coloured late-19th-century Continental interpretation of Titian’s celebrated portrait of Lavinia, the artist’s daughter, holding a basket of fruit. In this version, the sitter presents the basket aloft with subtle theatricality, her gaze engaging directly with the viewer beneath an ornate hairpiece and pearls. Painted with warm, golden tones and deep shadowing influenced by Venetian Renaissance colourism, the work speaks to the 19th-century fascination with Old Master revival pieces, particularly those associated with Titian and the Venetian school.

The painting bears the signature G. Doré 1874, in keeping with the practice of academic and commercial followers producing copies “after” Titian during this period. Though not by Doré’s own hand, it reflects the strong demand for Old Master subjects among collectors of the era.

Frame: Ornate gilt frame with foliate scrollwork; period style and presents well.
