Beneath the Cliffs, 1910
A striking coastal scene depicting fishermen working along a dramatic stretch of shoreline beneath towering white cliffs. A small boat rests on the beach while figures prepare their nets, and beyond them the sea opens out with sailing vessels moving across the water. The cliffs rise sharply to the left, catching the soft coastal light and creating a powerful contrast with the darker tones of the shore and sea.
The artist has captured the atmosphere of the coastline beautifully, with expressive brushwork suggesting wind, moving water and the shifting light of a cloudy sky. The warm earth tones of the beach and cliffs balance the cooler blues and greens of the sea, while the small sailing boats in the distance add depth and movement to the composition.
