‘Chrysanthemums’

Signed Charles Howson Bennett (1862–1940), dated 1906

A beautifully detailed still-life study of chrysanthemums arranged in a slender glass vase, set against a dark, velvety backdrop that heightens the vibrancy of each bloom. Bennett balances warm ochre, deep crimson and pale ivory petals with fine attention to the shifting textures of layered petals and translucent glass. The polished tabletop and reflective surface of the vase anchor the composition, creating a rich contrast between light and shadow that exemplifies Edwardian still-life painting at its most accomplished.

Medium & Support: Oil on canvas.

Frame: Gilt wooden frame with beaded inner edge and stepped profile; presented in excellent condition, clean and ready to hang.

Condition: Excellent overall condition; colours remain vivid, surface stable, and the canvas well preserved. The frame is also in superb condition, offering a high-quality presentation.

Dimensions:

Canvas: 38.5 × 28 cm
