‘Fisherwoman by the Shore’
Manner of Edward Charles Barnes (1830–1882)
A finely observed oil painting depicting a fisherwoman standing beside a working shoreline, her figure set against a moody coastal backdrop with the sea and harbour structures receding behind her. The artist shows particular sensitivity in the handling of fabric and flesh tones, from the softly modelled face to the layered textures of her shawl and apron. The basket of freshly caught fish and surrounding maritime details lend the scene both narrative interest and a strong sense of place, capturing the quiet dignity of coastal labour in the 19th century.
