‘Sheep on the Heath’

English school, 1894

An evocative pastoral landscape showing a small flock of sheep grazing along a heathland path beneath a soft grey sky. The artist captures the warmth of the russet earth and the shifting light of the English countryside, with gentle brushwork that conveys both atmosphere and movement. The distant horizon fades into cool blue tones, evoking a sense of quiet expanse and solitude.

Medium & Support: Oil on canvas.

Frame: Original gilt swept frame with foliate detail; one corner with age-related loss, otherwise sound.

Condition: Areas of surface wear and light craquelure; small losses to the centre and top right which have been historically repaired.

Signature: Signed lower right, indistinctly.

Dimensions:

Framed: approx. 80 × 60 cm

Visible painting: approx. 59× 39cm

Notes: A richly toned rural scene in the late-Victorian manner, reminiscent of the English naturalist school and the rustic serenity of George Vicat Cole and his contemporaries.
