This mid-20th-century British landscape unfolds across a gently curving stone bridge, anglers at rest, and verdant Devon surroundings. Colours are earthy greens, soft greys, and warm stone tones. The composition invites a quiet reflection, with light filtering through trees and water shimmering under the bridge—each brushstroke carrying a sense of place and calm.

Original oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left. Retains its original carved frame and the Royal Academy exhibition slip from 1960, confirming this very painting was selected to hang in the prestigious Summer Exhibition at Burlington House, London.

The Summer Exhibition has run annually since 1769 and is famously competitive, with only a small percentage of works accepted each year. Spring Run represents not only a charming mid-century British landscape — with a stone bridge, anglers and fresh Devon scenery — but also a rare piece of Royal Academy exhibition history.

Medium & Support: Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left.

Frame: Original carved wooden frame, with Royal Academy exhibition slip (Summer Exhibition, 1960) on the verso.

Condition: Vintage condition: light surface texture as expected of an older canvas; frame has age-appropriate wear (some gilt loss, minor chips) which enhance rather than detract from the piece’s character. The RA exhibition label remains, a rare and valuable provenance detail.

Dimensions:

Framed: approx. 75 cm × 65 cm

Canvas: approx. 59 cm × 46.5 cm

Notes: A standout work for collectors of British post-war landscapes, especially those who value provenance. Beautiful over a fireplace, in a grand hallway, or as a feature piece where its history can be appreciated.
