A finely painted 19th-century oil on canvas depicting travellers pausing along a wooded river path, with dense foliage framing the foreground and gently rising hills opening out beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. The composition draws the eye naturally through the figures and into the distance, with skilful handling of light and atmosphere lending depth and quiet narrative to the scene. Subtle details, including birds crossing the sky and figures in conversation, add scale and charm.

Frame: Decorative gilt frame with a deep moulded profile; light wear consistent with age.
Condition: Very good overall. There is an area of historic damage to the lower right quadrant which has been sensitively repaired and is now barely visible, as shown in the photographs. The paint surface is otherwise clean and stable, with colours remaining strong.
