The Fishermen’s Return
Circle of William Shayer Snr. (1787–1879)
A finely composed coastal scene depicting a small group of fishermen gathered on the shoreline, their day’s labour suggested by baskets, nets and the patient presence of laden donkeys. Sailing vessels rest quietly on the water beyond, while distant headlands and a softly lit sky lend depth and atmosphere to the composition. The figures are arranged with an easy naturalism, capturing a moment of pause and quiet exchange at the water’s edge. The gentle narrative quality and confident handling of landscape and light are characteristic of works associated with the circle of William Shayer Snr., celebrated for his evocative depictions of rural and maritime life.
Medium & Support: Oil on canvas, laid on stretcher.
Frame: Decorative gilt frame with richly moulded detail; light wear consistent with age.
Condition: Good decorative condition overall. There is a visible age-related crack to the upper left of the composition, where the paint has begun to open slightly; this remains stable with no losses and does not detract from the overall presentation. The paint surface is otherwise well preserved, with gentle, settled craquelure consistent with age.
Signature: Unsigned, as typical for works from the artist’s circle.
Dimensions:
Framed: 57 x 45 cm
Visible painting: 39× 29 cm.
Notes: A charming and atmospheric 19th-century coastal scene, rich in quiet storytelling and period character, and particularly well suited to an English country house interior.
