‘Watching the Storm’
English School, 19th Century
A dramatic oil on canvas depicting a lone figure standing amidst coastal scrub, gazing out across a restless sea beneath a heavy, brooding sky. Sailing vessels tilt against the distant horizon, their forms partially obscured by shifting light and weather, while the foreground is rendered in rich, earthy tones with expressive brushwork. The composition captures a powerful sense of atmosphere and solitude, characteristic of 19th-century British coastal painting, where nature’s changing moods take centre stage.
Medium & Support: Oil on canvas.
Frame: Gilt frame with foliate corner and centre ornament; light wear consistent with age, presenting attractively.
Condition: Structurally stable overall; the canvas has been relined. There are numerous areas of craquelure and some areas of paint lifting, along with general age-related wear, all consistent with the painting’s age. Despite this, the work presents well and retains strong decorative impact.
Signature: Unsigned.
Dimensions:
Framed: approx. 68 × 93cm
Visible painting: approx. 51.5 × 77cm
Notes: A striking and highly atmospheric Victorian coastal landscape, notable for its scale and moody presence, and particularly well suited to a traditional or country house interior.
